All About Moissanite Engagement Rings

When it comes to choosing an engagement ring, you have a few different options when it comes to the stone. Some of the most common stones used in an engagement ring are natural diamonds, lab grown diamonds, and moissanites. We have been carrying moissanites at Icing on the Ring for about 15 years and have had the pleasure of creating moissanite rings for countless customers.

What is a Moissanite?

Moissanites are a brilliant diamond alternative. There is a misconception that moissanites and lab grown diamonds are the same thing, but with different names, and that is not the case. Moissanites are their own type of gemstone and isn’t an artificial diamond. Diamond is composed of pure carbon, while moissanite is made of silicon carbide. These two gems look similar, and moissanite shares many of the diamond’s best traits (like extreme toughness and clarity) but there are areas where moissanite shines brighter than its famous cousin.

Check out some of the key differences between moissanite and lab diamonds:

Moissanites are an incredible option for many reasons and some of our top reasons for recommending a moissanite are:

1. Affordability

Moissanite is nearly identical to both lab-grown and earth-mined diamonds, but is available at a far more affordable price point. Since moissanites are man-made gemstones, there is a lot of flexibility in the size and shape. This means you are sure to find something you love in your budget!

2. Brilliance

Moissanite has a higher refractive index than diamond, and it exhibits nearly twice as much fire under direct light. They are extremely sparkly and have a lot of color to them. This is one of the biggest differences between a moissanite and a diamond.

3. Conflict-Free

Moissanite is made in an environmentally and ethically responsible lab, so you can be sure your gem is 100% sustainably sourced and conflict free. Being a man-made gemstone, no mining is involved, and there is a huge difference in carbon footprint compared to natural diamonds.

4. Durability

Just because a moissanite is not a diamond, doesn’t mean it isn’t durable and built to last. Diamonds are known for their hardness and moissanites are only slightly less hard according to the Mohs scale. A diamond ranks as a 10 on the Mohs scale and a moissanite ranks as a 9.25 on the Mohs scale. Moissanites are highly resistant to scratches, chips, and daily use, and guarantees that your ring will remain in pristine condition for years to come.

Some of our most frequently asked questions about moissanite rings:

1. How does the cost of moissanite compare to diamonds?

Moissanite is much more affordable than diamonds of comparable size and shape, which is one of the top advantages of a moissanite.

2. Is a moissanite a diamond?

No, moissanites are not diamonds. A moissanite is a brilliant diamond alternative, but its own gemstone. There are a lot of visual similarities between a moissainte and a diamond, but they are different gemstones.

3. Is moissanite a good option for an engagement ring?

Moissanite is a great option for an engagement ring for the reasons we listed above - affordability, brilliance, being conflict-free, and durability as well as the fact that they look extremely similar to diamonds.

4. Why are moissanite sizes in mm and not carats?

Moissanite’s size is determined by its length and width, unlike diamonds, which are measured in carat weight. Due to being about 10% lighter than natural diamonds, moissanite’s size is specified in millimeters instead of carats.
